Safety at every lane change
ADASENS Automotive GmbH develops lane change assistant with dynamic display overlays and real-time camera calibration for its camera monitoring systems
Germany / Wolfenbüttel, Lindau, 14th February 2018
Reliability and optimization of safety are essential aspects for assistance systems. This applies in particular to camera monitoring systems that are used as a replacement for the exterior mirrors in vehicles to improve the driver's perception of the environment. ADASENS Automotive GmbH, which is part of the Spanish FICOSA Group acting under the ADAS Business Unit, is now presenting its lane change assistant (LCAS) as a new development, which shows all the important information for the driver before, during and after a lane change.
LCAS is still under development and not yet on series maturity level. The system displays all distances and direct distances to other road users as transparent and dynamic overlays with colorcodes in green, yellow and red. The accuracy of the ADASENS lane change assistant is further improved by the integration of a real-time calibration of those cameras, resulting in a very precise assessment of dynamic overlays and Time-To-Collision estimation for objects around the vehicle. As a result, all conceivable scenarios for lane changes are taken into account with extreme reliability.
Safety solution for passenger cars and commercial vehicles
ADASENS' lane change assistant is a system for cars with a camera monitoring system. In addition, the development will also be used in commercial vehicles with appropriate adaptations, as it is already possible to replace exterior mirrors with cameras with monitors in the driver's field of view, especially in commercial vehicles. In order to ensure that all conceivable lane change scenarios are correctly and reliably detected by the assistance system, further parameters for collision avoidance must be taken into account in addition to lane recognition and blind spot detection. ADASENS' lane change assistant detects and warns of side collisions with other vehicles (Side Collision Warning).
A module for 3D parameters (3D Parameter Estimation) is adapted for position detection with estimation of the speed of other detected vehicles. In this way, a time to collision is determined in order to avoid an accident and to maintain all safety distances. Based on these data and other parameters, the ADASENS lane change assistant creates a graphic representation of the signal colours red, yellow and green as an overlay on the image of the camera in the monitor. This way, the driver can make a reliable and safe decision to change lanes. Individual customization of these overlays can be done on request. Furthermore, additional information from other sensors can be displayed via the image software of the assistant system.
ADASENS and FICOSA
ADASENS Automotive GmbH belongs entirely to the Spanish FICOSA Group, a global partner and system supplier of communication technologies, driver assistance systems, innovative mirror concepts and development services for autonomous driving, among others. With its developments in image processing sensors, ADASENS is part of the ADAS Business Unit, a very important and growth-oriented division of FICOSA. ADASENS operates independently at its headquarters in Lindau, Germany.
